Set in the pristine surrounds of the Longtom Pass, 12 km from Lydenburg, with magnificent mountain views, lies this unique private farm retreat, strictly for nature lovers who enjoy privacy and peace. Built on a restored gold mining settlement from the 1870s, the lodge can accommodate 8 to 11 people, self-catering or full board, in four en suite rooms.

The kitchen/lounge (called the Miners’ Canteen), has a fireplace, old-fashioned wood stove, gas fridges and gas burners with all utensils for self-catering. The large open verandah overlooks the stream with a small dam and surrounding hills where wild horses and klipspringers are regular visitors.

Paardeplaats is ideal for families or groups of friends, birders, hikers and mountain bikers who appreciate nature walks to the waterfall or along fascinating ruins of the Iron Age and gold mining era, to vistas over the Finsbury Valley.

With only an hour’s drive to the nearest gate to the Kruger National Park, it is also the ideal stop-over en route to the Lowveld.

Full board guests can enjoy awarded chef Brian Whitehorn’s unpretentious, scrumptious food, in a warm, homely atmosphere.

Nature walks, mountain bike trails, tractor drives, self-catering or DBB.
